PRINCE GEORGE — The Prince George Cougars have lost three in a row – and six of their last seven games – following a 4-2 defeat to the Calgary Hitmen Saturday’s (Jan. 3) night at the CN Centre.

Brock Souch and Lee Shurgot scored for Prince George while Alexander Levshyn stopped 36 shots in a losing effort.

Souch opened the scoring for the Cougars just before the seven minute mark of the first period after Eli Johnson set things up with a no-look pass from below the goal line.

The Hitmen responded and led 2-1 following power play goals from Hunter Aura in the first and Calder Hamilton in the second period. Shurgot restored parity after he ripped a a wrist shot past Eric Tu at 12:05 of the middle period. Tu finished with 20 saves in the Hitmen net.

The visitors pulled away with third period goals from Keaton Jundt and Andrei Molgachev – on the power play – to make it a 4-2 final.

The 23-12-2-0 Cougars return to action on Tuesday (Jan. 6) against the 20-9-4-3 Penticton Vees, with puck drop at the CN Centre set for 7:00 pm.

The third-place Vees are just one point back of the Cougars in the WHL’s Western Conference standings.
