PRINCE GEORGE – When you think of Canada’s Food Guide, the first thing that likely comes to mind is that well-known plate diagram. However, there’s much more to this valuable health resource than what you might expect. Nutrition expert Flo Sheppard highlights the wealth of features available on the guide’s online platform, making it an essential tool for Canadians.

Canada’s Food Guide has transitioned to a digital format, and many Canadians may not realize that the familiar plate is just the starting point of a comprehensive online suite of resources found on Health Canada’s website. Sheppard explains that the guide serves a dual purpose.

In addition to outlining basic plate proportions, the guide dives into the social and cultural dimensions of eating. It encourages Canadians to cook more at home, build their cooking skills, and enjoy meals together.

Moreover, the guide is much more than personal dietary advice; it lays the groundwork for meal planning in various settings, such as schools, hospitals, and long-term care facilities across the country.

Sheppard points out that it can be tailored to meet individual needs, including those with food allergies. In the fall of 2025, Health Canada reviewed the scientific evidence and reaffirmed that the recommendations remain grounded in high-quality research.
