Special Olympic Donut Days returned to Prince George! This event, a collaboration with Special Olympics and Tim Hortons, sees exclusive donuts sold from January 30-February 1, where all the proceeds of the Special Olympics Donut go straight to supporting local athletes.

“We really love to see those athletes competing and spending time together, and they work so hard to compete. They do a ton of travel and all that kind of stuff, they really pour their hearts into it, so it’s really nice to be able to help them with that,” said Connor Beebe, owner of Tim Hortons on Massey Drive.

“It’s awesome, because then we can sell the donut for $2 for Special Olympics, because it’s good for all the athletes to go to travel,” said Special Olympics athlete Marinka van Hage.

It’s a chocolate donut with a vanilla fondant base and whipped cream, and all proceeds from the 2 dollar donut goes straight to Special Olympics programs across the country. It’s greatly appreciated by the athletes who love all the sporting opportunities they get through Special Olympics.

“It is a lot of fun, it’s an honour, honestly. Especially with helping represent the team and even the province, as I’m going to Nationals,” said Special Olympics Athlete Chase Caron.

“Special Olympics is a big part of my life, and I like to do sports,” van Hage added.

Nationwide, Tim Hortons has a lofty fundraising goal but are optimistic they can hit it.

“Last year we raised $1.3 million as a franchise, and this year we’re going to aim for $1.7 million. I think we’re off to a good start, these guys are really helping, the athletes are just over there and they’re really helping to sell these donuts,” Beebe said.

Beebe jokes that calories don’t count when charity is involved, so he hopes you stop by a Tim Hortons and enjoy a donut to support our Special Olympics community.
