Spruce Kings shutout Eagles to win fifth straight game

PRINCE GEORGE — The Prince George Spruce Kings have won their fifth game in a row, as they knocked off the Surrey Eagles 5-0 in their only game of the weekend Friday (Jan. 30) night.

Five different players found the back of the net at Kopar Memorial Arena, while Ryder Green stopped all 28 shots he faced.

Marcus Lougheed opened the scoring with a power play goal at 15:53 of the first period, before Tai Ushio made it 2-0 less than two minutes later.

Mason Loewen went five-hole on Finn Marshall at 6:10 before Isaac Holt went post and in a little over three minutes later to make it 4-0 Spruce Kings after two periods. Marshall stopped 36 of 41 shots in a losing effort.

Former Eagle Lucas Busch rounded out the scoring in his Prince George debut with 27 seconds left on the clock, while the Spruce Kings were on a 5-on-3 advantage.

The Spruce Kings (21-13-1-0) are third in the Coastal Conference with 43 points from 35 games. They’re one point back of Coquitlam (21-11-1-1),though the Express have played one fewer game. Surrey (528-3-0) sits in last place with 13 points from 36 games.

The Spruce Kings will embark on a stretch of four road games in five days on Tuesday (Feb. 3) against the Langley Rivermen. They’ll also play the Express on Wednesday, the Nanaimo Clippers on Friday, and the Victoria Grizzlies on Saturday.

Their next game at Kopar Memorial Arena won’t be until Feb. 20 when the Powell River Kings come to Prince George.
