Two injured in early morning shooting on Redwood Street

PRINCE GEORGE — Two people were injured in a shooting early this (Feb.3) morning on the 2100-block of Redwood Street.

Prince George RCMP say the shooting occurred just after 3:00 a.m. with investigators arriving at the home to find two people suffering from gunshot wounds. The victims were later taken to hospital for treatment of their injuries.

“We do currently believe this to be tied to organized crime within our city and are focusing on that currently within our investigations,” said Corporal Jennifer Cooper with the Prince George RCMP.

Police officers are asking anyone who saw any suspicious people or vehicles on the street around the time of the shooting to contact them. Investigators would also like anyone with video surveillance in that neighbourhood to check their cameras, including doorbell cameras, for any people or vehicles moving through the area that they do not recognize from their neighbourhood.

“Though this investigation is just beginning, investigators have reason to believe that this was a targeted incident. However, though the public was not the target, shootings in our city require that we all pay extra attention to what is happening in our neighbourhoods and report anything suspicious to the police for us to investigate,” states Corporal Jennifer Cooper, Media Relations Officer for the Prince George RCMP.

To address the increased weapons violence we have experienced recently, the Problem Oriented Policing team has set up enhanced patrols in these neighbourhoods, focusing this targeted enforcement action on those known to be associated with organized crime and, in turn, increasing community safety.

“This targeted enforcement will be pointed towards those known to be involved in organized crime as well as increasing community safety through their overt presence,” Cooper said.

Cooper states there is no increased risk to the general public due to the targeted nature of the event, as she says the public was not the intended victims. However, she adds this definitely has an impact on community safety so the police are taking this threat very seriously.

“When we do have people using firearms in our community, even when it’s targeted, that does have an impact on community safety as there could be unintended victims. It’s wanton violence that is in residential areas with children and families present, so we are asking everyone to be a little bit more vigilant in their neighborhoods, be on the lookout for suspicious persons and vehicles that you don’t know from your neighborhood that may be passing through. We’d love those reports to be reported to our non-emergency line so we can follow up on them,” Cooper said.

The investigation remains ongoing, and police expect to remain in the neighbourhood for some time yet today (Feb.3). Cooper asks if you have any information or video footage to please reach out to the RCMP non-emergency line at 250-561-3300.

RCMP say it’s too early to determine whether or not the shooting is related to the early morning shooting that occurred Friday morning on Ahbau Street.
