Warmer weather leading to more potholes

PRINCE GEORGE – With rainfall dominating recent forecasts the water is causing havoc on city streets. The accumulation of puddles in addition to the plus temperatures are forming potholes across Prince George which are problematic for the many drivers travelling on the City’s roads.

“It is raining once again. We had very mild weather here in the Prince George area over the past week and it’s associated part with atmospheric rivers making landfall along the coast and bringing a lot of warm air and a lot of moisture as well. So we’ve had a lot of precipitation over the past week with a lot of rain and some very mild temperatures.” said Professor of Environmental Science at UNBC Dr. Stephen Déry.

The City is hard at work taking advantage of the warmer temperatures, filling in potholes with 156 filled since January first and they are running 2-3 crews around the clock. They are using a cold mix which temporarily helps to fill the holes which are still problematic but offer a temporary solution until the spring when they can be reevaluated. This current freeze thaw cycle looks to continue well into the future and this means more holes will most certainly be popping up.

“When we get the freeze thaw cycle or we have to treat compact ice or snow with chlorides it creates water. That water will find imperfections in the asphalt and it will penetrate that asphalt. Subsequently the vehicles traveling over it will hydraulic that water down into the cracks or a seam separation and start a pothole prematurely.” said Manager of Roads and Fleet for the City of Prince George Jordan Wiseman.

With temperatures slated to hit double digits this week it’s looking like the streets will continue to take a pounding with city crews trying to keep up but experts say it’s not spring yet.

“We’ve been in this warm spell for about a week and looking at an extended forecast we’re going to maintain above average temperatures for the next week. Then things will start cooling down again. It feels like spring in the month of February already. ” said Déry.
