PRINCE GEORGE – Prince George and the surrounding region is sending several athletes to represent Team Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano-Cortina, Italy, and among them is ski cross athlete Gavin Rowell, who will be making his Olympic debut.

“It’s super cool, and I’m super honoured and super grateful to be in the spot I’m sitting right now. Super thankful of family, friends, and everyone supporting me on the long road to get here. It feels really cool to be sitting in this position now,” Rowell said.

Rowell brings a lifetime of experience and accolades with him into the Olympics, including but not limited to:

  • Five career Nor-Am Cup victories
  • 2019 FIS Junior World Championships silver medal
  • 2024 World Cup Small Final fifth place finish.

As he prepares for his biggest stage yet, Rowell says his focus is entirely on the sport at hand, as he’s doing his best to block out any external noise and keep the skiing itself the goal.

“Realistically, I have to treat it like every other race. Go out there, give 100%, see what happens, and it’s no different than any World Cup, just on a much, much larger scale and stage,” he said.

“It’s a huge opportunity, and for sure there’s definitely a lot of emotion and other pressure compared to a normal race having all that viewership, but if I want to do well, then that’s kind of the the mindset I have to take,” he continued.

In the days leading up to the Olympics, Rowell says he’s had the chance to practice on the track where the event will be taking place, which has certainly helped with the mental side of the sport just as much as the physical.

“We’ve been really fortunate. They’ve never raced on this track before, so we’ve done testing the past two days on this track, so you’re pulling out of the Olympic start gate, everything’s there that will be there other than the people. We’ve had such a good experience and getting to see that first hand and get through that first overwhelming ‘oh my God, I’m at the Olympics moment,” Rowell said.

The Olympics will begin on February 6, and Rowell wanted to shoutout his family, friends, and the community that has supported his entire career leading up to this point.
