VICTORIA — The Prince George Spruce Kings took seven of a possible eight points as they wrapped up a stretch of four road game in five days.

The playoff-bound Spruce Kings picked up a 4-2 win over the Victoria Grizzlies at The Q Centre Saturday (Feb. 7) night. They’ve picked up points in their last nine games going back to Jan. 9, and have moved into first place in the Coastal East Division.

Prince George (24-13-2-0) is second in the Coastal Conference with 50 points from 39 games, and they’re just ahead of the Coquitlam Express (23-13-1-1) who have 48 points from 38 games.

Trent LeDrew got the Spruce Kings on the board just 12 seconds into Saturday’s game when he fired the past Victoria netminder Mikus Vecvanags.

The Grizzlies responded through Michael Dowdall at 7:08 of the opening period, but Tai Ushio ensured Prince George would take a one-goal lead into the intermission. He scored on a 5 on 3 power play at 11:42 of the period.

Victoria scored the only goal of the middle frame though Parker MacDougall, who beat Ryder Green on the power play with about five minutes left to play.

The Cougars pulled away in the third, as Dominic Szczygiel buried the eventual game winner just past the five minute mark. Mason Loewen added an empty netter to seal the win.

Green stopped 21 of 23 shots to pick up the win for Prince George. Vecvanags turned aside 39 of 42 shots in a losing effort.

Up next for the Spruce Kings is a pair of games in Burns Lake against the Coquitlam Express this weekend (Feb. 14 and 15) as part of the BCHL Roadshow. Their next game at Kopar Memorial Arena will be the following Friday (Feb. 20) against the Powell River Kings.
