Update: 9 dead, including suspect, in shootings at school and home in Tumbler Ridge

TUMBLER RIDGE — Update: (6:50 p.m.): RCMP say eight people, including the suspect are dead after a shooting at a school in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., while two more bodies were found at a home believed to be connected to the incident.   

Police say more than 25 people are hurt, including two with life-threatening injuries, after the shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.   

An order for residents of the community to shelter in place has been lifted after police determined there were no other suspects.   

RCMP say they received a report of an active shooter at the school around 1:20 p.m. and found six victims dead inside, as well as the body of the shooter.   

Two seriously wounded people were airlifted to hospital, while a third died while being transported for treatment.   

Police say they identified a secondary location believed connected to the incident, and two people were found dead inside the residence.

Earlier: (3:15 p.m.)The Tumbler Ridge RCMP has issued a localized police emergency alert due to an active shooter incident.

 As of 1:20 p.m. today (Feb.10), the Tumbler Ridge RCMP are currently on scene of a confirmed active shooter incident at the Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.  Those in the Tumbler Ridge area are asked to stay inside (shelter in place), lock your doors and refrain from leaving your home or business at this time.  All others need to avoid the area and follow police directions and restrictions.  

The original suspect is believed to have been located deceased. Work continues to determine whether a second suspect was involved and the total number of victims involved.

Additional police resources are being deployed to the area from neighbouring detachments, along with the North District Emergency Response Team.

RCMP have no confirmation at this time on the number of individuals injured or requiring assistance.

Peace River South MLA Larry Neufeld has released a statement regarding the incident, and says his “thoughts are with residents as this situation continues to develop.”

He added he’s been in direct contact with the Solicitor General to receive updates and to ensure all necessary provincial resources are being made available to support local law enforcement and emergency responders.

Neufeld also said public safety is the absolute priority.

“I urge everyone in the area to follow RCMP instructions, remain sheltered, and rely only on official updates. I am leaving Victoria immediately to return to my riding to be on the ground and available to support the community in any way needed. I will continue to stay closely engaged as this situation evolves.”
