Bird blasts budget

PRINCE GEORGE — Prince George-Valemount Conservative MLA Rosalyn Bird has weighed in on the provincial budget and she isn’t impressed.

Bird says there was nothing in it to address the fact seniors are still waiting 300 days for long-term care beds, and that ER pressure and uncertainty in the forestry sector remains. And that’s not all.

“At the end of the day as far as I’m concerned, the budget fails the core test – it’s not going to make life more affordable, it doesn’t make communities safer, particularly ours, we do not see an increase in services or see them being better delivered, or stronger, and the people in Prince George-Valemount are going to feel that.”

She adds she doesn’t buy the government’s excuse that U.S. tariffs are all to blame for B.C.’s economic woes.

“I don’t. I think it’s a convenient argument but there’s been challenges with that relationship for quite some time – this is not a new government that is reacting to a new idea. It’s something they could have prepared for.”

The budget included a record $13.3 billion dollar deficit while the tax rate on the lowest bracket is being increased by 0.54 per cent, with government staff saying 60 per cent of tax filers will face higher bills, and the average taxpayer will be hit with a $76 hike.
