Spruce Kings reign supreme after weekend sweep of Powell River Kings

PRINCE GEORGE — The Prince George Spruce Kings got goals from five different players as they knocked off the Powell River Kings 5-1 in a Saturday (Feb. 21) showdown at Kopar Memorial Arena.

Cody Arnold made 20 saves to record his first BCHL win as Prince George completed the sweep of Powell River. They won the the battle of the Kings after they also took Friday’s game by a 5-3 score.

Playing in his 150th BCHL game, Carter Hesselgrave got the Spruce Kings on the board first with a shorthanded goal scored eight minutes in. Mason Loewen made it 2-0 Prince George at 14:43 of the period.

The Spruce Kings then scored twice in seven seconds while playing four on four in the opening two minutes of the second period. Ryan Wachtel scored at 1:33 while Tai Ushio struck at 1:40 to make it 4-0 at Kopar Memorial Arena after 40 minutes.

Nick Bianchi added to the scoresheet at 5:41 of the third period to round out Prince George’s scoring. Powell River spoiled Arnold’s shutout bid when Josh Wiebe scored at 12:39 to pull one goal back for the visitors.

Kings netminder Devin Peck stopped 42 of 47 shots in a losing effort. Powell River (8-32-2-1) has already been eliminated from playoff contention as they sit ninth in the Coastal Conference with 19 points from 43 games.

The Spruce Kings (27-14-2-0) remain in first in the Coastal East division with 56 points from 43 games. They are second in the Coastal Conference, three points ahead of the Nanaimo Clippers (24-13-5-0), who have 53 points from 42 games.

The Spruce Kings will stay home for a pair of games against the league worst Surrey Eagles (6-31-6-0) next Friday and Saturday (Feb. 27 and 28).
