RCMP recover body after fatal Sunday fire at Fraser Lake Inn

FRASER LAKE — Police say they have recovered the body of a man who died in a fire at the Fraser Lake Inn last Sunday (Feb. 22) morning.

In a statement Friday (Feb. 27), Fraser Lake RCMP say they believe the body recovered was that of the man who was unaccounted for after the fire. Police had previously said that a man had re-entered the burning building, and officers attempting to search the building were pushed back by heavy smoke.

According to the RCMP, the man’s identity will be confirmed through DNA analysis. They also note that police are working on this investigation with the BC Coroners Service.

“On behalf of the Fraser Lake RCMP, I want to extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and community members affected by this tragic incident,” BC RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Brett Urano said in the statement.

“Our thoughts are with them during this extremely difficult time, and we will continue to support the BC Coroners Service as their investigation proceeds.”

The Village of Fraser Lake also extended its condolences to people affected by the fire.

“The impact of this loss is deeply felt, and many are experiencing profound grief as they await formal answers,” a Feb. 27 statement from village council said. “During this difficult period, the Village encourages the community to show compassion and respect for those most affected.”

“The Village remains committed to supporting the community, and all emergency personnel involved.”

The fire broke out around 3:00 a.m. last Sunday and it destroyed or damaged several neighbouring businesses. An online fundraiser started by Fraser Lake Mayor Sarrah Storey has raised nearly $3,500 with proceeds going to support the volunteer fire department.

Police also reiterated in their latest statement that there is still no evidence to suggest that the fire was criminal in nature.

“Public speculation or commentary can unintentionally add to distress to all of those impacted by the incident,” the village statement added. “Thoughtful communication helps create space for everyone to navigate an extremely painful and uncertain time.”

People with information that may help with the ongoing investigation are asked to call the Fraser Lake RCMP Detachment and reference files 2026-153 and 2026-159.
