Ghanaians celebrate flag raising on Prince George’s 111th birthday

PRINCE GEORGE – It was a joyous day at Prince George City Hall for several reasons, as the Ghanaian Association of Prince George celebrated a flag raising on the same day as Prince George’s 111th birthday.

Mayor Simon Yu was gifted this wooden plaque to celebrate the flag raising

“It cannot be more appropriate, that on the day that Prince George celebrates its 111th birthday, March 6, we as a City receive this beautiful gift from the Ghanaian Association of Prince George to help us celebrate this momentous year,” Yu said, upon receiving the gift.

“The Ghanaian community sets an example to show all the different nationalities of people in Prince George, that we as a city treasure. We treasure the mosaic, we treasure the diversity, we treasure inclusiveness, and most important: we celebrate each other’s culture,” Yu continued.

This is the second year in a row the flag has been raised to celebrate Ghana’s independence day, and the Ghanaian Association of Prince George says it’s an opportunity they are extremely grateful to have.

“It means everything to us, because we’ve had Ghanaians live here for over 40 years, and they’ve never experienced this. We are so grateful to the city for giving us the opportunity and also raising our flag at City Hall,” said the Association’s President Eddie Ameh.

Ameh adds he recognizes how special it is to have the opportunity for a flag raising, saying the Ghanaian community hopes this is just one of several ways it can contribute positively to the community through cultural celebrations.

“We do not take it for granted, we are definitely grateful to the Mayor, the Council, and the City for recognizing us, and we will leverage this by doing our best and then making sure that we enhance the image of not only Ghana, but also of Prince George through our culture and heritage,” Ameh said.

Ameh says the Ghanaian Association of Prince George has been growing, attributing that largely to the University of Northern B.C.’s and the College of New Caledonia’s expansions, bringing in more Ghanaians. He says this expansion has also meant positive benefits like more Ghanaian food in Prince George and the region, where in the past he says you’d have to go to the lower mainland or even Alberta to access it. He says there are plans in place to further increase Ghana’s presence in the community.

“As a result of that (growth), we are dedicating this year to plan for a community centre where we will promote our heritage, especially for those who were born here who have not gone back home. These are all plans that we have in the coming years,” Ameh said.

As the Ghanaians and the City celebrate both the flag raising and the City’s 111th birthday, Yu says he’s incredibly happy to recognize this milestone, adding he believes big things are on the way.

“This is very special, the 111 year mark is a significant day for Prince George. We wish Prince George a happy birthday, and we want all the citizens to know we are very proud. We have reached a big milestone: 111 years, the population has reached 100,000, there are great things to come,” Yu said.
