Cougars clinch fifth-consecutive WHL playoff berth with 5-1 win over Chiefs

PRINCE GEORGE — The Prince George Cougars have officially clinched a playoff berth for the fifth consecutive season.

The Cougars punched their ticket to the post-season after a convincing 5-1 win over the Spokane Chiefs Friday (March 6) night at the CN Centre.

Aiden Foster, Dawson Seitz, Kooper Gizowski, Brock Souch, and Terik Parascak all scored for Prince George, while goaltender Josh Ravensbergen made 28 saves, 13 of which came during a busy second period.

Goals from Foster and Seitz had Prince George up 2-0 after one period of hockey, as the pair found a way to get pucks past Carter Esler, who finished with 22 saves on 27 shots.

Spokane pushed back in the second and they cut the deficit in half when Owen Martin struck at 3:01 to make it 2-1, which is how things stood after 40 minutes.

The Cougars added to the scoresheet as Gizowski, Souch, and Parascak all struck in a 3:07 span to put the game out of Spokane’s reach. It was Parascak’s 29th goal of the season and 100th of his WHL career.

Souch and Gizowski added a pair of assists each as they were named the game’s second and third star respectively. Ravensbergen – who denied a couple of Spokane breakaway attempts – took home the first-star honours.

Prince George (37-22-2-0) are third in the Western Conference with 76 points from 61 games. They’re level on points with fourth place Kelowna (34-19-6-2) but are ahead as they have more regulation wins.

Spokane (32-28-1-0) are in sixth place with 65 points from 61 games. If the playoffs started today, the Cougars and Chiefs would meet in the first round. While that is not yet guaranteed, the two teams will rematch at the CN Centre at 6:00 p.m. this evening.
