Spruce Kings win fifth consecutive game after 4-2 over Express in Coquitlam

COQUITLAM, B.C. — The Prince George Spruce Kings have picked up another big win over a divisional rival, as they beat the Coquitlam Express 4-2 Friday (March 6) night in the Lower Mainland.

It’s the Spruce Kings (30-14-2-0) fifth win in a row and 30th of the season as they sit atop the BCHL’s Coastal East conference with a 62 points from 46 games. Both Coquitlam and the Chilliwack Chiefs have identical 25-18-2-1 records, good for 52 points from 46 games.

First period goals from Ryan Wachtel and Mathis Laplante pulled the Spruce Kings back level after the Express took the lead on two separate occasions at the Poirier Sports and Leisure Centre.

There were no scoring in the second period, and the Spruce Kings pulled away in the final frame with goals from Nick Bianchi at 13:31 and Tai Ushio into the empty net at 19:28 to make it a 4-2 final.

Colin Reay picked up the win for the Spruce Kings with 25 saves on 27 shots. He started and finished the game, but Ryder Green was in net for a 6:18 span in the first period. Green turned aside both shots he faced.

Coquitlam’s Brayden Burrows stopped 27 of 30 shots in 58:01 of work in a losing effort.

The Spruce Kings will look to solidify their lead atop the Coastal East Division as they play the Chiefs in Chilliwack at 6:00 p.m. this evening.
