CHILLIWACK — The Prince George Spruce Kings battled back from a 5-1 and a 6-3 deficit, but they couldn’t find a way past the Chilliwack Chiefs Saturday (March 7) night in the BCHL.

The Spruce Kings lost 7-6 to the Chiefs in overtime, giving them three out of a possible four points this weekend.

Chilliwack struck just 43 seconds into the game after A.J. Schaaf stripped Trent LeDrew of the puck and beat Ryder Green to open the scoring. The Spruce Kings responded on the power play at 9:25 as Marcus Lougheed’s one-timer beat David DiGirolamo to tie the game.

The Chiefs took the 2-1 lead into the locker room as Boris Borin responded with a power play goal at 15:03.

Reese Shaw, Markuss Sieradzkis, and Kevin Perreault all found a way to beat Green to put the Chiefs up 5-1 in the second period. Carter Hesselgrave pulled one of those goals back when he scored a power play marker with 3.5 seconds on the clock.

Ryan Wachtel’s shorthanded goal at 2:33 of the third made it a two goal game, but the Chiefs were back up 6-3 when Jack Plandowski scored less than a minute later.

Wachtel scored his second of the night when the Spruce Kings were on a 5-on-3 power play to make it 6-4. Mason Loewen then struck to bring his team to within one before Tai Ushio scored another power play goal to make it 6-6.

The comeback bid was snuffed as Edvin Nilsson gave the Chiefs the 7-6 win in overtime,

Prince George (30-14-3-0) has 63 points from 47 games, and are eight points ahead of Chilliwack and the Coquitlam Express (both 26-18-2-1) in the Coastal East standings with seven games left to play.

The Spruce Kings are back on the road in Powell River Thursday and Friday (March 12 and 13) before facing the Alberni Valley Bulldogs on Saturday night to complete the five game road trip.
