PRINCE GEORGE — The Prince George Cougars completed a weekend sweep of the Spokane Chiefs as they took Saturday’s (March 7) game at CN Centre by a 4-3 scoreline.

Brock Souch scored twice while Terik Parascak and Carson Carels also found the back of the net for the Cougars, who got 25 saves from Josh Ravensbergen.

Prince George opened the scoring through Souch at 7:56 of the first period as both teams were playing four-on-four hockey. Spokane responded on the power play through Rhett Sather at 11:32, and the two teams went into the intermission tied at 1-1.

The Cougars struck three times in the second period as Parascak restored the lead on the power play at 8:38, but Carels – who had primary assists on both goals – extended the lead with a sharp shot from the high slot during four-on-four play.

Parascak picked up an assist on that goal which moved him past Koehn Ziemmer into second all-time in Cougars franchise history with 261 career points.

Souch rounded out the scoring after he forced a turnover in the offensive zone and slipped the puck past Carter Esler at 16:01 of the second. Elser finished with 15 saves on 19 shots.

That goal ended up as the game winner as Spokane responded through Ossie McIntyre and Tyus Sparks to claw back to within one, but they couldn’t find the tying goal.

The Cougars (38-22-2-0) remain third in the Western Conference with 78 points from 62 games. They’re tied on points with Kelowna (35-19-6-2) but are ahead in the standings as they have more regulation wins.

Up next for the Cougars is a Tuesday (March 10) game against the BC Division-leading Penticton Vees. The Vees (41-13-4-4) have 90 points from 62 games, and they need just one point to clinch the division in their inaugural WHL season.
