MP Zimmer supports legal action as investigations continue into the Tumbler Ridge tragedy

PRINCE GEORGE – A Member of Parliament from northeastern B.C. says he supports a lawsuit against OpenAI after last month’s deadly mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge.

Tumbler Ridge MP Bob Zimmer believes the mother of a critically injured 12-year-old girl is right to take legal action.

Cia Edmonds filed the lawsuit this week after her daughter, Maya Gebala, suffered severe brain injuries from being shot three times during the February 10 attack.

The lawsuit claims the shooter got information and guidance from ChatGPT, which is developed by OpenAI, to help carry out the attack. Zimmer says this allegation is deeply troubling if it turns out to be true.

OpenAI has not responded to the lawsuit. The company previously said the shooter had been banned from the platform months earlier, but later created a second account.

Meanwhile, B.C. officials say investigations are still underway, including an RCMP probe and a provincial coroner’s inquest into the tragedy.
