Year-over-year unemployment rate drops in Prince George despite ‘weak’ national jobs report
PRINCE GEORGE — 5.2 per cent.
That was the unemployment rate in Prince George in February, 2026. Statistics Canada said that was the three-month average from December through to February. The unemployment rate is measured on a three-month average because of our region’s smaller population. It’s down from 7.6 per cent a year ago with the biggest job increases in wholesale/retail and business, building, and other support services.
Provincially it was a different picture with 20,000 job losses in British Columbia. Statistics Canada says the majority of the losses were full-time positions which were partially offset by increases in part-time work. The month-over month unemployment rate remained at 6.1 per cent.
Nationally, the economy lost 84,000 jobs in what Statistics Canada called “a weak job report.” The month-over-month unemployment rate increased from 6.5 to 6.7 per cent. Most of the job losses were in full-time employment.
