Prince George Ice Oval volunteers log nearly 1,000 hours during difficult winter

PRINCE GEORGE – Volunteers at the Prince George Outdoor Ice Oval have put in a lot of effort to keep the rink open during a tough winter. Warmer weather meant the oval had to close four times this season, which made the skating season shorter. Still, since opening in mid-December, the rink has given the community more than 30 days of skating.

Because of the tough conditions, volunteers spent almost 1,000 hours working—much more than in a typical year. Most of their time went into rebuilding the ice and fixing old equipment to keep the rink running. Support from local families, skating clubs, and regular visitors keeps these volunteers coming back every year.

The Ice Oval Society believes the best long-term fix is to install a refrigeration system so the ice can last through changing temperatures. This project would cost between $10 million and $15 million, with yearly operating costs up to $100,000. The society is asking all levels of government for help, saying the volunteers are dedicated but need better equipment.
