PRINCE GEORGE – Kyra Thurston and Jacinda Trenholm, two bowlers from Prince George, are gaining recognition across the country. They play for the Nechako Bowling senior girls’ doubles team and recently took home the provincial championship in Vancouver. Now, they are preparing for the national five-pin bowling championships in Winnipeg this spring.

For Kyra and Jacinda, Nechako Bowling Lanes in Prince George is more than a place to play. It feels like a second home. They have bowled together since they were young, and their teamwork recently earned them a provincial gold medal. At the B.C. championships, they scored 9 out of 10 possible points while competing against teams from all over the province.

Their provincial banner now hangs at Nechako Bowling Lanes, marking the first time a Youth Bowling Senior Girls Provincial Champions banner has been displayed there.

The trip to Winnipeg will not be easy. At nationals, Kyra and Jacinda will play a demanding 27-game round-robin, held at three different centres over three days.

The Prince George team says their success comes from the support of the local bowling community, including both regular fans and coaches who competed in the 1980s and 1990s.

For Jacinda, going to nationals means a lot. She has been bowling since she was five years old, and this year is both her first and last in the youth league.

Kyra and Jacinda will keep training until May before heading to Winnipeg to represent British Columbia at the national championships. As recent provincial champions, they feel everything is coming together, and when they step onto the lanes in Winnipeg, they will be ready to give it their best.
