Security camera pilot project sees success in early months

PRINCE GEORGE – At the City of Prince George’s final Committee of Public Safety meeting earlier this week, the Prince George Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Prince George presented the data on its security camera pilot project. This project began in December of 2025, and Downtown Prince George Executive Director Chrisie Berry says January and February saw success.

“(We saw) 113 incidents, which is an umbrella term for anything unusual. That could be a vehicle that shows up at three in the morning that doesn’t seem like it should be there, that could be people hanging around, that could be fires, that could be people, looking like they’re trying to break into something, damaging vehicles, anything that looks to be a little bit unusual,” Berry says.

Berry says the 113 incidents recorded provides great data to law enforcement and the downtown community, adding it provides reassurances to the business community that this is something that is being logged and actively monitored.

“Of those 113 calls, 35 calls were made to RCMP, and five were made to the fire department. So we know that we have put out fires as quickly as possible because we can see them being lit, we’re not coming in after the fact. The purpose of the program really was that proactive approach of being able to extinguish a fire before it’s an entire building that’s on fire,” Berry said.

“We’re already seeing a shift in some of the behavior. The cameras will turn on a siren first, kind of as their first notification to the individual that we can see you, you’re not supposed to be here, that kind of thing. And initially, the siren would go on and nothing would happen, so the RCMP would come and then they would do their thing. But now what we’re seeing is that the siren goes on, and a lot of times those individuals will move on on their own,” Berry added.

This pilot project is scheduled for 12 months, meaning it will end in December of 2026. However, Berry believes the early months of 2026 have already proven the benefits the security cameras have, so she is hoping to extend the project beyond just this year.
