PRINCE GEORGE — Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a winter storm warning for Prince George.

Ten to 15 centimetres of snow is expected with the national forecaster warning the public to expect “hazardous winter conditions.”

With the windchill, expect lows of minus 15 to minus 20 degrees with the snow expected to start falling midday Tuesday to late overnight/early Wednesday morning.

The following areas are expected to be hit with this sudden winter burst: Williston, Prince George (especially Highway 97 to the north of Prince George), Stuart – Nechako (especially Highway 16, 27 and Fort St. James), Lakes District

“Strong northeasterly winds gusting to 70 km/h, combined with falling snow, will result in near zero visibility at times. The heaviest snowfall rates will be Tuesday evening, impacting the evening commute,” says Environment Canada.

Roads and walkways will likely be difficult to navigate and visibility will likely be suddenly reduced to near zero at times.

“Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Consider postponing non-essential travel and outdoor activities until conditions improve.”

A winter storm warning has also been issued for Pine Pass with 15 to 25 centimetres of snow expected to fall starting midday Tuesday and continuing until Wednesday morning.

“Strong easterly or northeasterly winds gusting to 60 km/h will accompany this system resulting in near zero visibility at times in blowing snow,” says Environment Canada.
