Community Arts Council has big plans

PRINCE GEORGE – Fifteenth Avenue is home to the Prince George Community Arts Council as well as a number of guilds, like the weavers guild. But there are plans for this location. The Arts Council was before City Council looking to rezone the area in question, following a feasibility study last year.

“That feasibility study painted a really wonderful feature of how this redevelopment project would be financially feasible,” explains Shelby Richardson, Executive Director for the Council. “And what that looks like is a mixed-use building, with housing on the top few floors and then on the main floor arts facilities.”

The re-zoning paves the way for a grander plan that will involve up to 77 units of seniors housing on the current site.

“A couple of years ago our board and the Community Arts Council had discussed whether we should be looking at where we’ve been housed for over 50 years now. And we’ve realized that we have an optimum place here. We have a terrific venue for access for people across the city.”

There is a significant arts community in Prince George. It’s a hidden gem. But sometimes it gets – for want of a better expression – lost in the noise. This is aimed at supporting the entire arts community.

“That’s what the Community Arts Council is here for. It’s to support our arts community in the various different fields that they’re in. And that’s kind of the goal. That’s not really a visible picture, but that’s what we envision for the future of this site,” says Richardson.

“Housing seniors here, if possible, would be a bonus for both the people renting the apartments and for the council, because we’re providing a service and ensuring that we also have a future,” says Margaret Jones-Bricker.

There have been plans, the most recent of which being the civic core plan that bring that important community together. And should the arts community see a more permanent home is its future, what would it look like?

“The umbrella for the Arts Council would be as a physical space here for workshops and for the guilds. And then we would also continue to champion the performing arts as a venue in the space in the civic core.”

So whether it’s play in the cozy confines of the Playhouse or a music festival in the heart of the coldest season of the year, the Arts Council has some pretty significant plans to address all the arts needs.
