PRINCE GEORGE – A new interactive map is making it easier for families and friends to navigate the city’s cemeteries, and many people are already using it.

The City of Prince George has launched an online tool that helps people find gravesites by entering a name or burial year. The map shows the exact spot and works on both phones and computers.

Over a thousand people used the tool in its first three days. Since then, cemetery staff have been helping visitors use the search tool over the phone.

The map includes both Memorial Park Cemetery and Lheidli T’enneh Cemetery. Memorial Park is over 22 hectares and holds about 16,300 graves, with burials going back to 1914.

The City’s GIS and technology team built the tool themselves. Engineering Technologist Michael Le Morvan says the idea started about five years ago with a simple question. How do you find a plot when the cemetery is covered in snow?

The tool was first made for staff, but now everyone can use it. The city says people’s response has been very positive.

Right now, the map only shows where someone is buried. In the future, the city hopes to add more details about each person, so visitors can learn more about the people and stories from Prince George’s past.

You can find the interactive cemetery plot search at princegeorge.ca/cemeteries.
