‘War crimes’: Iranian Canadians horrified by Trump’s latest threat to destroy Iran

Apr 7, 2026 | 10:51 AM

TORONTO — Iranian Canadians whose family members live in Iran say they are horrified by U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest social media post threatening the existence of their homeland.

Trump said in a Truth Social post this morning that a “whole civilization will die tonight” if Iran does not agree to a deal that includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz before his latest deadline expires at 8 p.m. EDT.

Foad Farhani, who lives in the Greater Toronto Area, says he was driving to work this morning when his wife called him in tears while reading Trump’s post.

Farhani, whose parents are stuck in Iran, says threatening to bomb a country “into the Stone Age,” as Trump has said, and destroying power plants, highways and other public infrastructure are “war crimes.”

Aitak Sorahi, another Iranian Canadian who lives in York Region north of Toronto, says Trump’s posts stress her out so much that she tries to avoid checking social media.

In defiance of Trump’s threats, Iran’s president Masoud Pezeshkian said in a social media post that 14 million Iranians, including himself, have volunteered to sacrifice their lives in the war.
