BC Conservatives slam NDP for job losses

PRINCE GEORGE — The Conservative Party of BC is slamming BC’s NDP government for not taking responsibility for British Columbia’s jobless rate.

According to Statistics Canada, B.C. lost another 19,200 jobs last month, following major losses in February as the provincial unemployment rate rose .6 points to 6.7 per cent, the highest level since February 2016.

The Conservatives argue two straight months of heavy job losses is not a blip, noting it is a warning sign and accuse Premier David Eby of ducking responsibility for it.

“The March job report is pretty alarming. Two months in a row now we’ve had negative reports – 40,000 jobs lost in February and March alone between the two months,” said Prince George-Mackenzie Conservative MLA Kiel Giddens.

“It’s becoming a trend. B.C. actually has the worst private sector job growth among all provinces since 2019 and we need to have a private sector jobs plan in this province that is going to enable job creators to not only retain who they have and keep people on but also hire for the future.”

So, what would a plan like that look like?

“Well, we’ve been quite concerned with what the business community has called the entrepreneurial drought. And when we have higher taxes on the business community it leads to them having to make tough choices and that can actually mean job cuts.

“So, when we put added PST on things like bookkeeping and accounting services, that makes it harder for these small and medium sized businesses to actually hire that next person.”

B.C.’s Ministry of Jobs and Economic Growth has responded by saying US president Donald Trump’s tariffs and war in Iran are significantly impacting the global economy while adding BC continues to be a national leader with the second highest average hourly wage in Canada.
