PRINCE GEORGE – The Rated PG Thrashers are preparing for their biggest matchups to date as they get set to host two top teams this weekend on the big stage of the CN Centre. Fury on the Fraser is the second roller derby spectacle hosted by the CN Centre following last years successful “Roller Derby Rocks the CN Centre”. This year they have a double header on tap that will see the Rated PG Thrashers welcome team Northern BC and a new Foe with more then bragging rights on the line.

“There are two teams coming up including the Eves of Destruction from Victoria. This is the furthest up we’ve had somebody come here and play us. Usually we go to Vancouver, the Lower Mainland and into the interior but this time they’re coming up to play us. We have the golden ax as one of the trophies this weekend and then we have the Golden Chainsaw as the other.” said Roller Derby Referee Alicia “Lockdown” Hogg.

Roller derby is played in two periods of 30 minutes and the rules are plentiful but for new fans of the sport there are ten people on the track at a time with five players on each team. One player from each team will have a star on their helmets indicating that they are a Jammer. The Jammer is the one who can score points and their goal is to get around the rest of the players. The jammer scores a point for each opposing blocker they lap while opponents try to stop them with full contact.

“So the points are the Jammer has to go by the hips of each other player. Every time they go past an opposing player’s hips, they get a point for that and they don’t get repeat points. If that other player comes back around and they go again, they have to go all the way around the track to get another set of points. Then they can either if they have what’s called lead jammer, which means that they got out of the pack first they can call it off or it goes two minutes. We win by whoever gets the most points.” said Kaitlyn “Skatelyn” Liukaitis a member of the Rated PG Thrashers.

When it comes to the roller derby scene, all roads in British Columbia lead to Prince George. Boasting some of the most enthusiastic fans and largest flat-track venues in the nation, the city has become a premier destination for skaters from the lower mainland to the North as local organizers are quick to highlight.

“Prince George should be very proud of their roller derby community here because this is the largest venue in British Columbia, probably in Canada that roller derby is held. It’s just a fantastic opportunity to see some of the top roller derby players in BC and in our community.” said the CN Centre’s Sports and Entertainment Manager Glen Mikkelsen.

The Fury on the Fraser roller derby double header takes place at the CN Centre Saturday at 6pm.
