Prince George Humane Society overflowing with cats

PRINCE GEORGE – Keeping your cats indoors is now more critical than ever as the Prince George Humane Society hits maximum capacity. The Humane Society has received over 200 cats over the past two months, prompting The City of Prince George to remind pet owners that roaming cats are strictly against the rules as the Humane Society deals with a major capacity crisis. Shelter space is so tight that bylaw officers are temporarily pausing cat intakes and reminding the public that letting your pet wander could cost you a hundred and fifty dollars in fines.

“There are a lot of cats that roam the city which is against the bylaw. We also have a number of feral cats and feral cat colonies that are that are popping up around the city and what people often do is bring those cats into the humane society. As a result of that they’re well beyond their capacity. So we are in discussions with the Humane Society about possibly trapping some additional feral cats and potentially doing some spay and neuter and then releasing them back out.” said the City of Prince George’s Bylaw Manager Kent MacNeill.

The Prince George Humane Society says their capacity has reached critical levels and though it’s difficult to turn away animals at some point something’s got to give.

“We’re not asking the public to not bring us animals because we don’t care. We are asking people to not bring us animals so that we can do our best by the animals that are already in our care. Our organization is doing our best but we do have limited capacity both in terms of space and in terms of funds. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to bring them to us but just understand that our ability to offer immediate help in terms of rehoming animals or taking in new animals at this time is quite limited.” said Piper James of the Prince George Humane Society.

MacNeill remains optimistic that this situation is just temporary and says alternative measures are being discussed in the meantime until numbers can stabilize.

“We’re hoping in the near future that the Humane Society will be able to transfer some of them out to other facilities and we’ll be back to normal operations again. But until such time we’re just asking them to call us or call the Humane Society before taking in a cat that they want us to pick up.” said MacNeill.

So what can citizens of Prince George do to help with the stray population?

“If you know somebody who’s looking to adopt or if you are looking to adopt feel free to come on down and see if any of our current animals are would be the right fit for you. For every animal that finds a home and goes out of our building that means that we then have space to take in those other ones that need our help and our care. I would also say maybe doing a little bit of looking into the importance of having your pets fixed and things like that as well because that is something that over time contributes to these issues of the stray population being so large.” added James.
