Prince George under tornado watch

PRINCE GEORGE —Update: Environment Canada is warning that conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that could produce tornadoes, along with strong winds, large hail, and heavy rainfall.

Officials say the potential exists for significant damage or destruction to homes, infrastructure, and the natural environment if severe weather develops. Residents are urged to remain alert and be prepared to take immediate action if conditions worsen.

A tornado watch has been issued, meaning the atmosphere is capable of producing tornadoes. While a tornado has not been confirmed, authorities stress the importance of staying informed and ready to act quickly.

In the event a tornado warning is issued, or a funnel cloud or rotating debris is spotted, people should move indoors immediately. The safest place is on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, away from windows and exterior walls. Basements, bathrooms, stairwells, or interior closets offer the best protection.

Those in mobile homes, vehicles, tents, or other temporary structures are advised to leave immediately and seek shelter in a solid building. If no shelter is available, lying in a low-lying area and protecting your head from flying debris is recommended as a last resort.

People on the water are also urged to take precautions. Boaters should head to shore at the first sign of threatening weather, as small craft are especially vulnerable during lightning and severe storms.

Authorities emphasize staying aware of rapidly changing conditions, noting that severe weather can develop quickly and without much warning.

Earlier: A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for Prince George as Environment Canada warns conditions are favourable for potentially damaging weather heading into Friday.

Forecasters say the region faces a moderate level of impact, with a high degree of confidence that severe thunderstorms could develop. These storms have the potential to bring strong wind gusts and heavy rainfall, increasing the risk of localized damage and hazardous travel conditions.

Environment Canada notes that severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are capable of producing storms that may generate damaging hail, powerful winds, or intense rain. While not every storm becomes severe, residents are being urged to stay alert as the situation develops throughout the day.

Officials are also reminding the public of the dangers associated with lightning. “When thunder roars, go indoors.”

Five to 10 millimetres of rain could fall today and another 10 to 20 millimetres tonight. Wind gusts could also reach 60 kilometres per hour this evening.
