Emergency water repair to shut down section of Carney Street Tuesday

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. — A key section of Carney Street will be closed to vehicle traffic on Tuesday as City of Prince George crews undertake an emergency repair to the municipal water system.

The closure will affect Carney Street between 2nd Avenue and the River Road/1st Avenue intersection on June 30. City officials say work crews will be on site from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. replacing water infrastructure that requires immediate attention.

While vehicle traffic will not be permitted through the construction zone, pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to travel through the area using the west side of Carney Street.

The emergency repair is expected to have an impact on motorists travelling through the downtown area, particularly drivers approaching the city from the Cameron Street Bridge. Southbound traffic crossing the bridge will be detoured to 1st Avenue while construction is underway.

City officials are urging motorists to plan ahead and expect delays as crews work to complete the repair.

“Residents should use caution around the work zone, obey all traffic control signage and follow directions from personnel on site,” the City said in a news release issued Monday. Drivers are also being asked to reduce their speed when travelling near construction areas to help ensure the safety of workers and the public.

The work is part of the City’s ongoing efforts to maintain and repair critical infrastructure. Water utilities are a vital component of municipal services, and emergency repairs are often necessary when infrastructure issues arise unexpectedly. Replacing aging or damaged water system components helps maintain reliable service and can prevent more significant disruptions in the future.

Although the closure is expected to last only one day, commuters who regularly travel through the area may want to consider alternate routes during peak periods. Businesses and residents located near the construction zone are also being advised to allow extra travel time while the work is taking place.

The City has not indicated whether water service interruptions are expected as part of the repair. Officials say crews will work throughout the day to complete the replacement and restore normal traffic flow as quickly as possible.

The closure highlights the ongoing challenges faced by municipalities as they maintain essential infrastructure networks. Water mains, valves and other underground utility components require periodic repairs and upgrades to ensure safe and dependable operation. Timely maintenance can help avoid larger failures that may result in extended service disruptions or more costly repairs.

Residents looking for up-to-date information on road closures, construction projects and pedestrian access routes can consult the City’s online traffic disruption map. The tool provides daily updates on construction activity and transportation impacts across Prince George.

With workers, heavy equipment and traffic control measures expected to be in place throughout the day, the City is emphasizing safety as the top priority.

Motorists, cyclists and pedestrians are encouraged to remain alert when travelling near the work area and to follow all posted signs and detours. Officials say public cooperation will help crews complete the emergency repair efficiently while minimizing inconvenience to residents.

The roadway is expected to reopen once the repairs are completed and the area has been deemed safe for travel. Until then, drivers crossing the Cameron Street Bridge should be prepared to follow the temporary detour to 1st Avenue and allow additional time for their commute.
