Crash survivor backs insurance reform
PRINCE GEORGE – A Quesnel woman who lost her leg in a devastating motorcycle crash is speaking out in support of proposed legislation that would expand catastrophic injury benefits under British Columbia’s no-fault auto insurance system.
MLA for Prince George-North Cariboo Sheldon Clare is continuing to advocate for Bill M237, the Insurance (Vehicle) Amendment Act, 2026, a private member’s bill designed to improve access to benefits for people who have suffered catastrophic injuries in motor vehicle collisions.
The legislation seeks to make two key changes. First, it would give individuals injured on or after May 1, 2021 additional time to apply for catastrophic injury benefits. Second, it would broaden the definition of catastrophic injury by allowing a single amputation to qualify for enhanced benefits instead of the current requirement of two amputations.
Clare recently appeared before the ICBC Review Committee to present comments on the bill, which has already advanced to second reading in the legislature.
