City says service downloading cost Prince George $26.4 million in five years
PRINCE GEORGE – Prince George politicians say a new report detailing the financial impact of senior government service downloading will strengthen the city’s efforts to lobby Victoria and Ottawa for relief.
Council received a report outlining what administration described as the “significant and ongoing” pressures municipalities face when responsibilities traditionally belonging to provincial and federal governments end up requiring local resources and spending.
The report was prepared after council requested a detailed breakdown in January of how provincial and federal downloading affects Prince George taxpayers.
Councillor Brian Skakun, one of two councillors who brought forward the original request, said the issue has become increasingly difficult for local governments to manage.
