Bird leaves Conservative Caucus, will sit as Independent MLA

PRINCE GEORGE — Prince George-Valemount MLA Rosalyn Bird has announced she is leaving the Conservative Caucus and will continue serving her constituents as an Independent member of the Legislative Assembly.

In a statement released Tuesday, Bird said the decision followed “considerable reflection” and was not made lightly. She said political parties play an important role in democracy, but should not become substitutes for the people elected to represent their communities.

Bird said British Columbians are tired of political infighting and division, arguing voters expect their elected representatives to disagree respectfully, work collaboratively where possible and remain focused on the challenges facing families, communities and the province.

The MLA said transparency, accountability, integrity and responsible government will continue to guide her work. She also reaffirmed her support for free speech and respectful public debate while rejecting hatred and discrimination.

Bird’s departure comes amid a series of high-profile exits from the Conservative caucus. Recently, Kamloops Centre MLA Peter Milobar and Langley-Abbotsford MLA Ian Paton also left the caucus to sit as Independents, reducing the size of the official Opposition and raising fresh questions about internal divisions within the party.

In her statement, Bird focused much of her attention on economic issues, saying British Columbia needs a renewed focus on growth. She pointed to the challenges facing small and medium-sized businesses, including rising costs, taxation, regulatory complexity and administrative burdens. At the same time, she highlighted opportunities in technology, innovation and the province’s resource sectors, including forestry, mining, agriculture, fisheries and energy.

“As an Independent MLA, I will work with anyone who brings forward good ideas,” Bird said, adding she will support initiatives that benefit Prince George-Valemount and British Columbia while opposing those that do not.

Bird stressed that while her political affiliation is changing, her commitment to constituents remains the same.

“I was elected to serve the people of Prince George-Valemount. They will remain my first priority,” she said.

The MLA concluded her statement by expressing optimism about the province’s future, saying she believes British Columbia’s best years are still ahead.
