Cougars name Vaughan team captain ahead of road trip

PRINCE GEORGE — The Prince George Cougars have a new leader.

The Western Hockey League club announced 20-year-old defenceman Corbin Vaughan has been named the 32nd captain in franchise history. Vaughan will make his debut as captain Saturday night when the Cougars open a two-game road trip against the Seattle Thunderbirds in Kent, Washington.

“It’s been a great ride here in PG,” Vaughan said. “The culture and the people in this organization have probably helped me the most to take this step in my leadership and have made me who I am today around the rink.”

Vaughan enters the weekend with 187 career WHL games under his belt, including 89 contests in a Cougars uniform. The veteran blueliner takes over the captaincy from Bauer Dumanski and joins a long list of leaders who have worn the “C” for the organization since its inaugural season in Prince George.

The Cougars believe Vaughan’s experience and leadership qualities make him a natural choice to guide a team with championship aspirations this season.

Supporting Vaughan in the leadership group will be alternate captains Aiden Foster, Lee Shurgot and Arsenii Anisimov.

Saturday’s matchup against Seattle marks the first stop of a busy weekend for the Cougars. Following their visit to Kent, Prince George will travel north to face the Vancouver Giants on Sunday, wrapping up the two-game swing before returning home.

Fans unable to make the trip can watch Saturday’s game against the Thunderbirds free on YouTube, with puck drop scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Pacific Time.
