QUESNEL — Coralee Oakes has been elected mayor of Quesnel, defeating incumbent Ron Paull by a wide margin.

Oakes received 2,137 votes, or 84.2 per cent of the vote, while Paull finished second with 324 votes. Brian Waters received 58 votes.

The victory moves Oakes back into municipal government after a political career that has included service on Quesnel City Council, the Cariboo Regional District and as the region’s MLA. Oakes also served as a provincial cabinet minister.

When launching her mayoral campaign in September, Oakes said her priorities would include community safety, economic growth, workforce development and responsible planning for Quesnel’s future.

“I believe Quesnel can be a safe, affordable and growing community where families and young people can build a future, seniors are well cared for, businesses can invest and create good jobs, and residents can have confidence in the services their city provides,” Oakes said at the time.

Her platform called for greater coordination between RCMP, bylaw enforcement, fire services, outreach teams and community organizations, along with expanded addiction treatment and recovery services.

On economic development, Oakes pledged to focus on business retention, diversification and industrial land development while continuing to advocate for the forestry sector and pursuing opportunities in mining and manufacturing.

Quesnel voters also elected six councillors. Jeremy Drew topped the council polls with 1,281 votes, followed by Mitch Vik, Scott Elliott, Tony Goulet, Laurey-Anne Roodenburg and Ryan Adams.

Oakes will now take over the mayor’s chair from Paull.
