PRINCE GEORGE — The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George will have a combination of new and familiar faces around the board table following the latest election results.

One of the most competitive races was in Electoral Area D, where Ken Schinkel emerged victorious from a crowded field of six candidates.

Schinkel defeated five challengers to become the area’s new director.

Following his victory, Schinkel said his immediate priority will be getting comfortable with the position and gaining a better understanding of the issues facing both his electoral area and the Regional District as a whole.

Rather than immediately identifying areas where he wants to make changes, Schinkel said he plans to learn the role and understand the issues before deciding where he believes changes may be needed.

Emergency preparedness and wildfire mitigation will also be among his priorities.

Schinkel said he wants residents to feel protected and have confidence that emergency plans are being put into practice across the region.

While Area D will have a new representative, voters in Electoral Areas A and G opted to return their incumbent directors to the board.

Victor Mobley secured another term representing Electoral Area A with a decisive victory, capturing more than three-quarters of the vote.

Mobley received 77.7 per cent of the vote in his race.

It was an even more decisive result in Electoral Area G, where incumbent Jerrilyn Kirk was re-elected with approximately 90 per cent of the vote against one challenger.

Kirk said representing Area G means recognizing that the individual communities within the large electoral area have different needs and priorities.

Several other races also helped determine the makeup of the next Regional District board.

There was no election required in Electoral Areas C and E.

Lara Beckett was acclaimed as director for Electoral Area C, while Art Kaehn was acclaimed in Electoral Area E.

Gary Jamieson won the race to represent Electoral Area F.

In Electoral Area H, Dannielle Alan secured the director’s position after defeating one challenger.

The results mean the Regional District board will feature a blend of returning directors with experience at the table and representatives beginning new terms.

For Schinkel, winning the six-person contest in Area D marks the beginning of his first term and the start of the process of getting up to speed on Regional District business.
