New ‘Intimate Choreography’ Policy In The Works

PRINCE GEORGE – Although it may have a stage, lights, and hundreds of seats, a theatre just like any other business, is a workplace. Management at Theatre NorthWest is on its first draft of a new intimate choreography code of conduct.

The policy defines ‘intimate choreography’ as: “scenes involving intimate physical contact, such as sex scenes and kissing. This can be expanded to include the familial intimacy between parents and children, embraces between dear friends, sexual tension and chemistry where no tocuhing occurs, and is also an element in scenes of sexual violence.”

In theatre, fight choreography typically has strict policies and procedures, but when it comes to intimate scenes on stage the rules are not so clearly defined.
The first draft of the policy covers issues such as the difference between consent given on and off stage.

A student from CNC has teamed up with Theatre NorthWest to write the policy.

“So when you are on stage you are given permission to use certain language, you are given permission to behave in a certain way, whether it’s a kiss, a hug, holding someone’s hand, and when you are off stage that might not be okay. Because when you are giving permission for intimate choreography you are giving permission under very specific circumstances, you can’t transfer that consent over to off stage unless you ask for it separately,” says Caitlyn Soder, CNC Human Resources Practicum Student.

Marnie Hamagami, General Manager of Theatre NorthWest, hopes the policy will be approved and implemented by September 2018.
