City Improves On Greenhouse Gas Reduction

The City of Prince George recently received an award recognizing its efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Under the joint Green Communities Committee, the City of Prince George has been recognized for it achieving the first three levels of a four-tier carbon neutrality plan.  Level Four would be the achievement of total carbon neutrality. The City cites a number of efforts, such as the District Energy Plan and greener renos to civic facilities, as part of its goals identified in the Climate Action Charter.
Councillor Jillian Merrick applauds the City’s work on the climate change front and points to another area for accolades.
“Where we really excelled a number of years was achieving Level Five with the Partners for Climate Protection which, at the time, there was only six communities in Canada that had achieved that level of greenhouse gas action.”
She gives credit also to local industry for spending millions to improve air quality.
But there is more work to be done. Josh Kelly cites one big example.
“More electric vehicles in the city. It’s something I know we’d like to pursue more to show it is possible to have electric vehicles in a Northern climate.”
He says two major facility replacement projects, the Four Seasons Pool and Fire Hall #1, also give the City the opportunity to reduce its carbon footprint.
