Orange Shirt Day at Local Schools
PRINCE GEORGE – Hundreds of students at Duchess Park Secondary are wearing orange shirts today to recognize those affected by the residential school system.
The event is inspired by the story of Phyllis Webstad whose orange shirt was taken away when she attended the St. Joseph Mission residential school in Williams Lake.
Aboriginal Education worker Spencer Hammond says “historically learning about the residential school system, you had to seek it out, and if you walk into our school right now there’s orange banners, there’s posters with orange shirt day, there’s hundreds of students and staff wearing orange shirts so it just makes it hard to ignore.”
While Duchess and other school students are wearing orange shirts today, similar recognition events are planned through the College of New Caledonia and UNBC communities tomorrow.
