Electric Fence 90%+ Rate Keeping Bears Away
PRINCE GEORGE – Bears will continue to wander through many of our properties and neighbourhoods. For some residents, bears can be a threat to livestock and crops. Gillian Sanders is a beekeeper, small farmer and resident from the Kootenay region, she says the use of an electric fence can be one of the solutions for both people and bears to coexist. For several years she has assisted landowners throughout the Kootenays with the installation of over 250 electric fences with a 90 percent success rate in keeping bears away with a little shock therapy. Sanders says if an electric fence is properly installed and well maintained, bears can stay away. Conservation Officer Service would agree an electric fence is an effective way of deterring bears. However, residents still need to secure bear attractants like garbage. Gillian Sanders is the founder of Grizzly Bear Coexistence Solutions and continues to travel the province to help find a solution and educate residents who would like to coexist with bears.
