New Way To Use Excess Apples

PRINCE GEORGE – If you have some apples to get rid of them, a group of local organizations has joined forces to take them off your hands. Northern Bear Aware, REAPS, PG PIRG, UNBC’s Environmental Sciences Department and Chartwells have plans for your excess apples.

“So the whole project is really based around waste diversion. So every Fall, all these apples fall from the trees around Prince George and nobody has anything to do with them,” says Mark Hendricks, the Food Services Director for Chartwells at UNBC.

Instead, the apples will be collected at UNBC and put to good use.

“When they’re processing the fruit, they’re also going to have workshops to show the students how to can,” explains Terri McClymont with REAPS, one of several organizations involved with the venture. “So they’re making jams, jellies, pie fillings, juice out of them. The students get to make and take and the leftovers are going to go back into the community, to the various kitchens.”
