BC Thanksgiving Food Drive
PRINCE GEORGE – The BC Thanksgiving Food Drive kicked off in Prince George today with a proclamation from Acting Mayor Brian Skakun declaring September 15th, 2018 as BC Thanksgiving Food Drive Day. The Salvation Army Food Bank, along with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, are working together to hopefully raise over 30,000 pounds of food donations for the Thanksgiving season here in Prince George.
The demand for donations is always high because “hunger knows no season and we are seeing consistently, month after month, people in need,” says Captain Neil Wilkinson of the Salvation Army. “We find that donor awareness heightens around this time of year, and the closer that we get to Christmas.”
The BC Thanksgiving Food Drive was started in Burnaby in 2009, by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and has expanded across the province over the last six years. Last year was a record high for Prince George, with over 22,000 pounds of food donated. This year, the goal to reach is 30,000 pounds.
“It just warms my heart to know how generous our community really is, for donating for the people who really need it, especially this time of year with Thanksgiving and Christmas coming up,” says Emily Albertson, Public Relations Chairperson for the church.
