PRINCE GEORGE – There’s a new sport that is catching on all across the nation and the City is opening its doors to it.

The city installed four courts in Fairburn Park, replacing one of three tennis courts at that location. Pickleball is a cross between tennis and badminton, but a paddle is used as opposed to a racket. It is also one of the fastest growing sports in North America and the City has heard numerous requests for facilities to accommodate it.

“Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in North America, and the City has seen a high demand for pickleball courts in recent years,” says Chris Bjorn, Parks Supervisor. “The sport is particularly popular amongst seniors and, since we opened the courts this summer, they have been heavily used. The City is working with community groups to investigate whether pickleball courts might work in other areas of the city.”

He says the courts will serve as something of a pilot and, if they catch on, there could be more in the city.
