Wildfires Garnering Attention At Provincial Meetings

PRINCE GEORGE – Wildfires are expected to get plenty of attention as the annual Union of BC Municipalities opens its annual convention Monday morning in Whistler.

Several interior communities are meeting with government officials to discuss what kind of changes need to be made to deal with the growing problem of forest fires.  BC has recorded its two worst fire seasons in history over the last two years.  The fires have chased thousands from their homes and threatened to burn entire towns.

UPDATE

Another unprecedented wildfire season has swung through BC. Forests Minister Doug Donaldson announced the new Community Resiliency Program for communities to access. The $50-million dollar fund will be used to help local governments reduce wildfire risk in their communities. The program takes a holistic approach to wildfire risk reduction and fuel management treatments and will consider fire prevention activities on provincial Crown land and private land, in addition to local government and reserve land.

“Wildfires don’t recognize the difference between municipal, on-reserve or provincial Crown land, and neither should the programs designed to address those fires,” said Doug Donaldson, Minister of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development. “The new program was designed from the ground up to address long-standing concerns with the way we were dealing with wildfire risks throughout the province.”

The new Community Resiliency Investment Program will provide up to $50 million over the next three years to local governments and First Nations to help reduce wildfire risks around their communities.
