Shovel Lake Wildfire Being Held

PRINCE GEORGE – The worst is over for the Shovel Lake wildfire southwest of Fort St James.  For the first time since its discovery July 27th, the BC Wildfire Service says the wildfire is being held and not expected to grow any larger.  The massive fire has burned over 922 square kilometres of forests.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Meanwhile, the Cariboo Regional District has downgraded evacuation orders to alerts for 45 properties in Chutanli lake and 322 properties in the Baezaeko/Blackwater areas. Evacuation alerts for 99 properties in the Nazko area and 346 properties north of Batnuni Road have been lifted to all clear.

The wildfires have slowed timber harvesting operations throughout the area over the last month.  And now that is affecting jobs at the Isle Pierre sawmill.  Canfor shut down the mill Tuesday after running out of logs.  It hopes it can restock the log yard by Monday so milling can resume.
