Some Containment On Wildfire Front, Despite Winds
PRINCE GEORGE – Bucketing helicopters and water skimming aircraft helped ground crews prevent any growth in the Shovel Lake wildfire yesterday. While the fire was generally calm in the morning afternoon winds fed the fire as it challenged containment lines. BC Wildfire officials say the massive wildfire is now 40 percent contained.
Meantime Emergency Management BC says preliminary figures show about half as many structures have burned this fire season, compared with the same time last year. The provincial agency says 165 houses, barns, bridges and other structures have been lost to wildfires since April 1st. However, the agency warns, that the numbers are fluid and depend on reports from local governments, which means they could change as evacuees return home.
To the south in the Cariboo Regional District, an evacuation order remains in place for the Bazaeko Blackwater Nazko area. An alert remains in place for the Nazko area, north of Nazko. The order for the Nazko Road has been downgraded to an alert and the alert for the Nazko Valley has been partially lifted to all clear. A map of the areas can be found online. With lower temperatures and recent rainfall, the fire activity in the Cariboo Fire Centre has gone down.
Under the Baezaeko Complex, the Shag Creek fire which is over 12,000 hectares in size, is being monitored. At 60 percent containment and 100 percent guarded, crews are making steady progress on the Blackwater River fire. The North Baezaeko fire is 15 percent contained and 40 percent guarded. The Cariboo Fire Centre says this fire has shown the most activity in recent days. Meantime, the Narcosli Creek fire is now under control with 80 percent containment and 100 percent guarded.
