PRINCE GEORGE–Two local lawyers say that the $5,500 cap on pain and suffering for minor injury claims–which went into effect on April 1st, might come as a shock to people.

ICBC announced changes to help reign in billion dollar cost overruns earlier this year.

Lawyer Andrew Kemp gave the example of a single mother who gets in an accident and suffers long lasting effects from what was a minor injury. He says before she could have benefitted from 30-40 thousand dollars in compensation and now will be capped at $5,500.

“It’s got to be one of the most heartless, unkind pieces of legislation I’ve seen in my 36 years of practicing law,” said Garth Wright, Lawyer

ICBC released a statement saying that the changes introduced this year are the biggest action they can take in order to get the car insurance system back on track and better for BC.

Also stating that if the injuries last beyond 12 months, and have a serious impact on someones life, the limit won’t apply.
