Cassiar Fire Zone prepares for potential fires with dry weather

May 31, 2019 | 9:34 AM

NORTHERN BC–The BC Wildfire service is currently battling several wildfires throughout the Cassiar Fire Zone and is preparing for potential new wildfire activity in the region.

The lack of ran and increase in higher temperatures are the perfect match to light a fire.

Three new wildfires started this week in the Cassiar Fire Zone of the Northwest Fire Centre. Firefighting crews are also still working on holdover fires associated with the 2018 Alkali Lake fire and the 2018 Schaft Creek fire.

Holdover fires are those that keep burning underground over the winter.

A 150 person camp will be set up in Dease Lake this weekend and will be on a rotational basis to help with faster response times to new fires.

Current wildfire in the Cassiar Fire Zone Include:

  • 2018 Alkali Lake Fire (40 kilometres north of Telegraph Creek)
  • Black Angus Fire (40 kilometres south of Lower Post)
  • Liard River Fire (25 kilometres west of Lower Post)
