BBQ Bristle

TYH: Don’t eat a wire brush bristle this BBQ season

I am not a BBQ-er, and a bristle getting lodged in my throat is the last thing that would ever have crossed my mind–the one time I did decide to enjoy a vegan dog.

This week however, I discovered that wire bristles getting stuck in peoples throats–or even worse…their stomachs–is in fact a thing.

According to a study published in 2016 by the Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery from a Consumer Reports article, 1,700 Americans ended up in emergency rooms between 2002 and 2014 after ingesting a wire bristle and one in four of those were admitted to hospital.

This week I found out that there are ways to help prevent that from happening to you! It’s all about how you clean your grill!

Jasmyn Jaynes an Environmental Health Officer for Northern Health says using aluminum foil, a grill stone and even an onion can be used in replacement.

I know…an onion, wild.

Jaynes mentions if you’re a die hard wire brush user, and the other methods simply won’t cut it for you, to regularly check your brush and even check your food before completely annihilating it.

Happy and safe BBQ-ing season friends!
